MANILA - After yet again drawing flak for being “epal,” the Manila city government led by Mayor Isko Moreno has changed the name of its free WiFi kiosk from ISKOnek to MNL Konek.

Moreno on Wednesday unveiled the free WiFI hotspot and charging station called ISKOnek, a play on his name and "connect." The project is in partnership with Eastern Communications.

Netizens, however, slammed Moreno for violating his own ban on epal politicians, or those who name public projects after them.

Eastern Communications, not the city government, came up with the name ISKOnek, said the city’s chief public information officer Julius Leonen.

“In line with our open governance policy, we listened to the frustration of the netizens regarding our anti-epal policy,” Leonen told reporters.

“We hope Manileños would enjoy the free services offered by the new WiFi kiosks.”

Moreno earlier drew flak after a food truck that serves free porridge was named “Kusina ni Isko.”
