MANILA- Ozamiz City top cop Chief Inspector Jovie Espenido on Tuesday asked for more time to submit his counter-affidavit and other defenses to charges of murder and arbitrary detention.
The charges stemmed from the bloody raids against alleged lawless groups in June that resulted in the death of 9 suspects.
Espenido went to the Department of Justice (DOJ) on Tuesday for the first preliminary investigation hearing on the complaint filed by Carmelita Ugmad Manzano, wife of Fancracio Semine Manzano and mother of Jerry Ugmad Manzano, who were both killed in the raid.
Carmelita was among 6 persons arrested and allegedly illegally detained.
The other fatalities in the June 1 operation were Victorino Espina Mira Jr., Lito Ugmad Manisan, Romeo Cogo Libaton, and Alvin Tulba Lapeña.
Charged along with Espenido are Chief Inspector Glyndo Lagrimas Pujanes, SPO4 Renato J. Martir Jr., PO2 Sandra Louise Nadayag, and several John Does.
Espenido and other respondents have until August 29 to file their counter-affidavits.
