MANILA - The Makabayan bloc, along with Bataan Rep. Geraldine Roman, filed Wednesday a resolution seeking to investigate the alleged discrimination and harassment against transgender woman Gretchen Custodio Diez.
Diez, 28, was detained by police in Quezon City on Tuesday after a scuffle with mall personnel for using the female comfort room.
Diez was later released that night after the mall's management dropped the unjust vexation complaint against her.
Roman, a transgender woman, said the incident was a "violation of human rights."
"Babagsak ba ang langit kung pinayagan natin ang isang transwoman umihi sa CR ng babae?" she told reporters Tuesday.
(Will the skies fall if we allow a transwoman to use the women's restroom?)
Besides Roman, the signatories of the resolution were Gabriela Party-list Rep. Arlene Brosas, Bayan Muna Party-list representatives Carlos Zarate, Ferdinand Gaite and Eufemia Cullamat, Kabataan Party-list Rep. Sarah Elago, and ACT Teachers Party-list Rep. France Castro.
