GUIMARAS—Vice President Leni Robredo on Monday urged the government to conduct a thorough investigation and hold those accountable in the capsizing of 3 motor bancas in Iloilo Strait that left 31 people dead.
"Ang pakiramdam ng karamihan, kung mas maayos iyong rescue, mas marami sanang buhay iyong na-save," she said after meeting with the survivors and relatives of the victims in Guimaras.
"Siguro iyong pinaka-request natin, na magkaroon ng masusing imbestigasyon, para kung mayroong kailangang managot, managot," she added.
Robredo said she will also send a report to the Department of Transportation (DOTr) to consider lifting the suspension of operations of outrigger boats.
"Iyong mas urgent na hinihingi nila ngayon, makabalik iyong biyahe ng mga pump boats," she said.
The Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) has directed the roll-on/roll-off (Roro) vessels in the area to increase the frequency of their trips to cater to the transportation needs of the passengers.
"Ang nagbibiyahe dito Roro na ang priority daw cargo saka mga sasakyan. Mayroong nagbibiyaheng fast-craft, pero sobrang mahal. Ang claim nila anti-poor iyong desisyon," she said.
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) had said that squalls or sudden violent winds were to blame for the tragedy.
