MANILA -- Nearly 8,000 people fled up to chest-high floods in San Mateo town, Rizal province, after monsoon rains inundated large portions of Luzon, an official said Sunday.

The river level in the town east of the capital went as high as 24 meters, overshooting the 20-meter critical level. It was at 23.14 meters past midnight, said Vic Tomazar, incident commander at the municipal disaster office.

Eight of the town's 15 barangays were flooded and 1,809 families or 7,794 people were evacuated, Tomazar told DZMM.
