MANILA—A US Marine has gone missing after going overboard in the Sulu Sea on Thursday morning.
In a statement, the US Embassy said the Marine was assigned to the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) aboard USS Essex.
“As we continue our search operation, we ask that you keep our Marine and the Marine’s family in your thoughts and prayers,” said Col. Chandler Nelms, commanding officer of the 13th MEU.
“We remain committed to searching for and finding our Marine.”
The embassy said the ship has been searched multiple times and the embarked aircraft aboard the vessel has been conducting search and rescue operations within the Sulu Sea and Surigao Strait.
The operations have covered roughly 3,000 square nautical miles after a US Navy P-8 aircraft and Philippine Coast Guard vessels expanded the search area.
The embassy said the Marine’s family has been notified but the name is being withheld while the search is ongoing.
