MANILA - President Rodrigo Duterte has created an order revoking the creation of the Negros Island Region (NIR).
Duterte signed Executive Order No. 38 revoking a 2015 order by his predecessor Benigno Aquino III which created the Negros Island Region.
The order states that the provinces of Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental shall revert to Region VI (Western Visayas) and Region VII (Central Visayas), respectively.
In revoking the Aquino-issued EO, Duterte said “there is a need to ensure that priority government programs and projects are sufficiently funded.”
He noted that the establishment of regional offices of departments and agencies in the NIR would require substantial appropriation to be fully operational.
Former Interior Secretary Mar Roxas however lamented Duterte's move, saying EO 38 will cause "slower" development in the Negros islands.
"With NIR dissolution, mga Negrense will be traveling farther and spending more for services and Negros Occidental and Oriental development will be slower," Roxas tweeted.
