MANILA - Former President, now House Speaker Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s only daughter, Luli Arroyo-Bernas, has been elected president of the Congressional Spouses Foundation Inc. (CSFI).
Arroyo administered the oath of office to Arroyo-Bernas and other officers of the CSFI at the House of Representatives, Wednesday.
In her brief remarks, the speaker said, “To my daughter Luli and all of her fellow officers of the CSFI and all of you members, congratulations to all of you and thank you for putting together the Congressional spouses again.”
Arroyo also announced the return of the offices of the organization to the House of Representatives complex.
“I hope that you will be very happy now that you have found your home again back here in the halls of Congress,” she said.
Previous Speaker, Davao del Norte Rep. Pantaleon Alvarez, had evicted the CSFI from its offices at the Batasan, citing the need for office space. Alvarez at that time too had confirmed estrangement from his legal wife Emelita, who was the president of the organization.
The CSFI is usually led by a family member of the House Speaker, with family members of other House leaders taking prominent positions in the organization.
“I think we don’t have much time left, only a year, so the most important thing is to normalize now that you’re not squatters anymore,” Arroyo said.
Arroyo encouraged the group to carry on with projects that benefit the districts.
“I understand from Luli, the one that would fit the most would be Kabuhayan fairs, then it will help the people in your districts and therefore help your [congress] spouse so I hope therefore they proceed with that,” she said.
