MANILA - Davao 1st District Rep. Paolo Duterte, son of President Rodrigo Duterte, on Wednesday said he is willing to join other political parties even after being adopted by the National Unity Party.
"I am honored to have been adopted by the National Unity Party, one of the biggest political organizations in the country. To all other political groups out there, I am still up for adoption," he said.
"If being adopted by most, if not all, political parties is to be of service to the people, then I am more than willing to join all of you."
Duterte, who serves as House deputy speaker for political affairs, said his goal is to unify Congress to "improve the lives" of the Filipinos.
"Salamat sa tiwala ninyo sa akin at sa aming pamilya. Naway masuklian ko ang inyong pagtiwala sa pamamagitan ng tapat at tunay na paninilbihan sa ating bayan," he said.
(Thank you for trusting me and my family. I hope I can return your faith by giving an honest service to our country.)
The President's son is also a member of the Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HNP), a regional party chaired by his sister Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio.
He ran and won as representative of Davao City’s first district under the Hugpong sa Tawong Lungsod (HTL).
The siblings earlier formed the "Duterte Coalition" in the House which endorsed the Speakership bid of Davao City Rep. Isidro Ungab amid the House leadership battle of Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano, House Majority Leader Martin Romualdez, and Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Velasco.
The freshman lawmaker had also expressed interest in the speakership, which President Rodrigo Duterte publicly dismissed by threatening to resign if his eldest son becomes leader of the House.
