MANILA—President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday defended anew the appointment of former military and police officers in his Cabinet.

"Sinasabi nila na maraming military sa gobyerno ko. Marami nga namang abogado eh lahat naman nasabit sa corruption," he said in a speech during the oath-taking of newly-appointed officials in Malacañang.

"Dito na lang ako sa military, mapagsabihan mo pa ng prangka," he added.

Duterte didn't name those allegedly involved in corruption, but he has fired a slew of government officials in the first half of his term.

The president repeatedly defended his decision of appointing of former military and police officers to civilian posts, saying he can rely on them.

"Know that you will always have my complete support as long as you resist any temptation that will taint your character and reputation as public servants," he told the newly-appointed officials.

"Keep your dignity intact because I personally guarantee that any form of corruption will be dealt with promptly and severely."
