MANILA - Police on Monday said it has arrested 2 suspects in the kidnapping of a man who escaped to safety last week after shouting inside a bank.
The 28-year-old victim, alias Gary, said he brought a vehicle from one suspect, Christian Rueda, through Facebook, but noticed a problem with the SUV after 2 weeks.
He said he met last Tuesday with Rueda and Jiovanni Ojeda, another suspect who posed as a car mechanic, to conduct a road test on the vehicle.
Rueda and Ojeda, he said, brought him to an alley, where they punched and pointed a gun at him before driving by a hardware store to buy materials to tie him.
The pair allegedly brought Gary to a safehouse, from where they demanded P300,000 in ransom money from his relatives using his cellphone.
Gary’s family failed to raise the ransom. The victim then convinced his captors to allow him to withdraw P43,000 from his passbook account at a bank in Marikina.
"Sabi sa akin kapag gumawa raw ako ng gulo, babarilin daw ako ng kasama niya agad-agad," Gary said.
(I was told that if I make a scene, they'll shoot me immediately.)
Gary said Ojeda went with him inside the bank while Rueda waited inside a vehicle.
The victim tried signaling to security guards and the bank teller that he was with a kidnapper, but they did not understand him, prompting him to yell.
Gary's abductors fled the bank, but were later arrested by the police Anti-Kidnapping Group.
Rueda refused to comment, but Ojeda admitted to kidnapping Gary.
The pair will be charged with kidnapping for ransom and serious illegal detention.
