MANILA - A suspected robber was killed in an encounter with the police on Don Quijote St. corner Espana in Manila Friday evening.

Police said they got a tip from an informant about a robbery incident involving a man wearing orange on board a motorcycle.

"Ang text sa akin, 'sir 'yung nakamotor, naka-orange na damit, naka-helmet 'yung driver," said Senior Inspector Philip Ines, commander of the Manila Police District Station 4.

Ines said he joined the mobile group patrolling Espana and spotted the men fitting the description they got at around 11:00 p.m.

"Habang binabaybay namin 'tong Florentino, nakita namin, same descrption," he said. "Sisithain na namin sila, kaso tumakbo sila. Nakamotor."

Ines said they were chasing the suspects when one of the men fell as the motorcycle skidded on a slippery part of Don Quijote Street.

"Hinahabol namin siya dito. Tapos 'yung motor, madulas kanina 'yung kalsada, nag-slide, nalaglag itong isa na 'to," he recalled.

"Nagkaroon kami ng exchange of fire sa may lugar na ito," he added.

Ines, who was wearing a bullet-proof vest, said he did not even notice he got hit by a bullet from the still-unidentified suspect.

He said the Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) recovered suspected illegal drugs from the suspect.

Ines said he has already asked barangay officials if there are CCTV cameras around the area that may help them identify the other suspect who got away.
