MANILA -- Filipinos who feel that the country should return to the "right path" should look to democracy icons Ninoy and Corazon Aquino for inspiration, their son former President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino said on his mother's 10th death anniversary on Thursday.
"Siguro ho ang gusto lang maiwan sa ating lahat gaano man kadilim ang sitwasyon minsan sa ating buhay, sa buhay ng ating bansa nagkaroon tayo ng mga pinuno at kagustuhang maibalik sa tama ang ating pong buhay," Aquino said in a speech during the Mass for Cory's death anniversary.
(Perhaps what they want to leave us is that no matter how dark our situation in life sometimes is, in the life of our country, we had leaders and a desire to bring back our lives to what is right.)
"Ngayon po siguro nadadama na naman natin ang pangangailangan na talagang mabalik sa tamang landas at palagay ko po yung inspirasyon na ibinibigay pa rin sa atin nilang dalawa ang siyang magpapanatili sa ating pakikibaka tungo sa tama para sa atin pong bayan," he added.
(Perhaps we are now feeling a need to return to the right path and I think the inspiration that the 2 of them give us will sustain our fight towards what is right for our country.)
The assassination of Ninoy, an opposition senator, triggered the 1986 EDSA Revolution that toppled the 20-year regime of Ferdinand Marcos and catapulted to the presidency Cory, who led the country's transition back to democracy.
Quoting Archbishop Socrates Villegas, known to have strong ties to Cory, Aquino also urged the public to strive to be remembered for fighting for what is right.
"Tayo'y dapat gunitain o maalala hindi dahil sa mga nagawa o nakamtan natin, pero kung saang laban tayo kasali. Palagay ko nga po, tulad ng pinagbilin sa atin ng Poong Maykapal, iisa lang naman ang batayan: paano ba natin trinato ang ating kapwa," he said.
(We should be remembered not for what we did or achieved, but for what fight we joined. Like what our Lord commanded, there should only be one standard: how we treated others.)
Aquino has criticized the anti-narcotics drive of President Rodrigo Duterte, who has praised Marcos in several occasions and allowed the strongman's burial in the Heroes' Cemetery.
