MANILA - House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano said he would "firmly follow a friendly policy" towards China, the Chinese embassy said Wednesday.
Cayetano made the remarks in a meeting with Chinese Ambassador Zhao Jianhua on Tuesday, the Chinese Embassy in Manila said in a statement Wednesday.
The House leader thanked China for its support for the economic and social development of the Philippines, the embassy said.
"He also added that he would firmly follow a friendly policy towards China and looks forward to strengthening exchanges and cooperation with the NPC, bringing Philippines-China relationship of Comprehensive Strategic Cooperation to a new high," it said.
Zhao met with Cayetano to congratulate him on his election as the chamber's leader.
He also extended the congratulations of China's Minister of Foreign Affairs Wang Yi and Li Zhanshu, chairman of China's National People’s Congress, to the former foreign affairs chief.
The Chinese envoy said China stands ready to work jointly with Cayetano to "further deepen exchanges and cooperation between legislatures, towards more amicable and brighter bilateral relations."
