MANILA - Senate President Vicente Sotto III and Senator Gregorio Honasan II on Monday led a surprise random drug testing of employees at the upper chamber of Congress.
Sotto and Honasan were the first to take the test before Department of Health personnel, minutes after the Senate president announced the drug testing during Monday's flag-raising ceremony.
Senate secretary Atty. Myra Villarica also underwent the drug test.
The test will be administered to at least 400 of the total 2,000 Senate employees, said Nory Mercado, public information and media relations director of the chamber.
DOH personnel said urine samples for test will be evaluated at the East Avenue Medical Center and results will be released in a few days.
Those who will test positive for drug use will undergo another round of testing. Another positive result for drug use will warrant counselling or rehabilitation, said Sotto.
He also mentioned that Senate rank-and-file employees will receive a P5,000-increase in their "grocery and transport allowances" starting Wednesday amid the rising prices of basic goods.
