MANILA- Less power interruptions may be expected in the Visayas following the repair of a transformer damaged by the magnitude 6.5 earthquake that hit Leyte earlier this month.
The 150MVA transformer from the Ormoc substation was fixed Saturday ahead of the July 31 deadline set by the Department of Energy.
The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) said overall, 4 of the 6 damaged transformers in Ormoc City are already operational. This would help lessen "rotating power interruptions" experienced in Leyte, Samar, Bohol, and Biliran, it said.
The NGCP is still fixing the 2 other transformers as well as the damaged Luzon-Visayas High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC)-- the transmission link between geothermal power plants in Leyte and Luzon.
