MANILA - Former Senate President Aquilino "Nene" Pimentel Jr. on Saturday said legitimate members of the ruling PDP-Laban may elect new leaders in accordance to its rules.
"Nobody stays in power forever, gusto niyong palitan ang mga leader bakit naman hindi. But they should do it in accordance to the rules sapagkat may rules ang partido eh," Pimentel, who founded PDP in 1982, told radio DZMM.
"Ang gusto ko lang bigyaang-diin, alam niyo demokrasiya tayo. Yun ang importanteng matandaan. Kung karamihan ng tunay na miyembro ng partido ay gusto nila palitan ang liderato, why not? Go ahead, but do it in accordance with the rules."
A faction of PDP-Laban convened Friday morning to unseat his son, party president Sen. Aquilino "Koko" Pimentel, and secretary-general Davao del Norte Rep. Pantaleon Alvarez.
Koko Pimentel said the gathering and the election of new officials was "not officially sanctioned" by PDP-Laban as it was convened by a member "who was expelled from the party."
"[Willy] Talag is unknown to me. I researched, nagtanong ako sa mga tao (I asked around), apparently he ran in 2016 for congressman in a district in Makati and got 6,000 votes," Pimentel told ANC's Dateline Philippines.
"He's not even a party stalwart," he said.
