MANILA - Customs Commissioner Nicanor Faeldon on Thursday said his aide, who was scolded by House Majority Leader Rodolfo Fariñas during a congressional hearing on Wednesday over a Facebook post, is entitled to her own opinion.

"I acknowledge that Facebook is a social media platform readily accessible to the public. I am not condoning the action of my Chief of Staff but Atty. Mandy Anderson is entitled to her own opinion,” Faeldon said in a statement.

"I will let Atty. Anderson remain in the Bureau as we need more people like her whose character is untainted with politics and corruption. Also, her personal opinion does not reflect or affect her efficacy in public service. We will remain firm in our resolve to provide good public service,” he added.

Faeldon added that Anderson’s statements are exclusively hers and do not represent the views of the Bureau of Customs.

“The BOC does not have any inclination towards any of the politicians but we only follow the directive of President Rodrigo Duterte [and] that is to have an honest, clean and corrupt-free Bureau of Customs,” he said.

“As a public servant, I believe that our loyalty should always be to the public. We do not work for anyone but the public,” he added.

Fariñas on Wednesday scolded Anderson during a congressional hearing for calling House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez an “imbecile” on her personal Facebook page.

Anderson wrote the caption as she shared an article about Alvarez' threat to dissolve the Court of Appeals over their release order for the six Ilocos Norte provincial officials who were detained by the Lower House.

In an interview with DZMM, Anderson said she had a conflict with Alvarez for refusing to process the promotion of an employee at BOC on his behalf.

“Nagsimula 'yan nung may hiningi siya promotion ng taga-BOC. Ako 'yung parang naging middleman, nakikipag-communicate sa staff niya. So nung hiningi niya 'yung promotion na 'yun, siyempre chinecheck ko kung qualified ba na ma-promote. Eh ang nangyari, hindi qualified," she told DZMM.

Alvarez has not commented on this allegation as of posting.
