San Juan Mayor Francis Zamora is making some changes in the Greenhills area. Here are some of the big stories making the headlines on ANC today:
Going after the Veep
The camp of Vice President Leni Robredo said her impeachment is the real agenda behind the sedition cases against her led by lawyer Larry Gadon. Robredo will be in Zamboanga del Norte for a 1 p.m. event. Her spokesperson lawyer Barry Gutierrez will be on ANC's Headstart. Gadon also said he is planning to go after Supreme Court Justice Antonio Carpio, a critic of the Duterte administration’s policy towards China and the West Philippine Sea.
Up in smoke
Poor smokers, literally. President Duterte has signed a law to increase excise tax on tobacco. The funds will be earmarked to support the Universal Health Care Act. An additional P45 will be added to every cigarette pack by next year, P50 more in 2021, P55 in 2022 and 60 in 2023. But will it help curb smoking? The increases will make a big dent on the pockets of smokers. But will they really care and continue to light up anyway?
Can the country’s economy benefit from the Duterte administration’s pivot to China? A “Belt and Road” China-Philippines forum today might provide some answers. Also, in the evening, the central bank will host a bankers’ reception where the country’s leading bankers will be watching out for hints from central bank Gov. Ben Diokno on any new policy on rates. ANC will report on these events in its business newscasts.
For those who grew up in the 80s, Greenhills holds a special place in their hearts. It was THE shopping haven for the latest fashion trends, PX goods, handicrafts, the latest toys, jewelry and more. Through the years, it has gone through many facelifts. And now San Juan Mayor Francis Zamora is trying to improve the traffic flow around the venerable shoppers’ paradise by imposing a parking ban on the streets of Connecticut, Annapolis and Club Filipino Avenue, all surrounding and leading to the Greenhills complex. In this age of sprawling malls, will Greenhills thrive and survive with these new traffic rules?
Seven years after it held its first-ever live event on Philippine soil, ONE Championship has become a regular staple in the local sports calendar. ANCX breaks down the promotion's 18th event in Manila, Dawn of Heroes, before it kicks off at the Mall of Asia Arena on August 2.
