MANILA - The Department of Education (DepEd) on Friday denounced the killing of a school principal and his sibling who was an employee of the department in Negros Oriental.
Unidentified gunmen repeatedly shot school principal Arthur Bayawa, 55, and his sister Ardale inside their home in Barangay Hibaiyo at around 1 a.m. Thursday.
The DepEd, in a statement, expressed its condolences and said it has mobilized assistance to the victims' family.
"Likewise, DepEd calls on the authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and looks forward to results that will bring the perpetrators to justice," it said.
"DepEd enjoins the community, local officials, and law enforcement agencies to work hand in hand to ensure peace and unity amid the recent spate of killings in the province."
The siblings were among the latest victims in the spate of killings in the province.
Less than an hour later, armed men also stormed the house of Barangay Buenavista Chairman Romeo Alipan, 64, and shot him several times.
Last Tuesday, lawyer Anthony Trinidad was killed while his wife was wounded by motorcycle-riding assailants in the city.
Four policemen were allegedly killed and tortured by members of the communist New People's Army (NPA) in Ayungon last week.
