MANILA - Overall Deputy Ombudsman Melchor Arthur Carandang is the Acting Ombudsman following the retirement of Ombudsman Conchita Carpio Morales, according to the Ombudsman’s public affairs office.
Carandang will temporarily head the Office of the Ombudsman as Malacañang has not yet announced President Rodrigo Duterte’s choice from among three nominees shortlisted by the Judicial and Bar Council.
According to Republic Act No. 6770 or the Ombudsman Charter, “the Overall Deputy shall serve as Acting Ombudsman in a concurrent capacity until a new Ombudsman shall have been appointed for a full term.”
Carandang was earlier ordered suspended by Malacañang following his supposed probe on the wealth of the President and his family, which Morales refused to implement citing the independence of the office.
Morales stepped down as Ombudsman on Wednesday after a full seven-year term.
