(UPDATED) Tropical storm "Gorio" intensified further while moving over the Philippine Sea early Thursday, state weather bureau PAGASA said.

At 5 a.m., Gorio was packing top sustained winds of 85 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center, and gusts of up to 105 kph, PAGASA meteorologist Samuel Duran told DZMM.

The tropical storm was last spotted 500 km east of Casiguran, Aurora.

Gorio is expected to intensify into a severe tropical storm within the next 24 to 36 hours, said Duran.

"Papalakas pa po kasi nasa karagatan pa po ito," he explained.
The tropical storm will enhance the habagat or southwest monsoon, which will bring rains over Luzon and the Visayas.

This may trigger floods and landslides in Metro Manila and the regions of Ilocos, Cordillera, Central Luzon, Calabarzon and the provinces of Mindoro and Palawan, PAGASA said in its 6 a.m. advisory.

Visayas and the regions of Cagayan Valley, Bicol and the provinces of Marinduque and Romblon meanwhile will experience cloudy skies with light to moderate rains and thunderstorms.

Partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rains or thunderstorms will prevail over Mindanao.
