MANILA - One of the suspects in the killing of four police officers in Negros Oriental supposedly committed suicide, an official said Thursday.
The suspect was a barangay official in the town of Ayungon where the police officers from the Regional Mobile Force Battalion-7 were killed, said PNP chief Oscar Albayalde.
Albayalde said the official was not a rebel, but was probably aware of the presence of the New People's Army in his barangay.
Corporal Relebert Beronio, Pat. Raffy Callao, Pat. Roel Cabellon, and Pat. Marquino de Leon were tortured before they were executed, Albayalde said.
"These policemen were already there since early morning around 7:30. They even ate inside his house for lunch and they were executed around 2:30 in the afternoon.
He added that NPA rebels already claimed responsibility for the crime.
"They're all at large, no arrest but we'll be filing a case against them," he said.
President Rodrigo Duterte initially offered a P1-million reward for the capture of those responsible for the crime. But on Monday, he announced that he would be adding another P300,000 if the mastermind is presented dead.
