Senator Koko Pimentel is the new Senate President after getting the backing of 20 members of the Upper Chamber.

Three senators, including Pimentel, voted Sen. Ralph Recto for Senate President. The other two are Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV and Sen. Francis Escudero.

Pimentel earlier said he would get a "super majority" of at least 19 votes to become the next Senate president. Sen. Cynthia Villar was the last senator to join the majority who voted for Pimentel.

Sen. Manny Pacquiao led the oath-taking of Pimentel.

Sen. Juan Miguel Zubiri earlier said voting for Pimentel as the new Senate President would mean that three top positions in government - President, Senate President and House Speaker - will be occupied by a Mindanaoan.

President Rodrigo Duterte hails from Davao while Pimentel is a native of Cagayan de Oro City.

Incoming Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez is currently the congressional representative of Davao Del Norte's 1st District.
