MANILA — The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has sought help from other government agencies and telecommunication companies to announce the 5th Metro Manila Shake Drill.

The 5th metro-wide earthquake drill will take place during the early hours of Saturday, July 27, in contrast to past earthquake drills that were held during the day.

The drill will start at 4 a.m., signaled by the sound of sirens and alarms.

MMDA chairman Danilo Lim has asked the Department of Information and Communications (DICT) and National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) to inform the public of the drill ahead of its conduct, said MMDA chief of staff Michael Salalima in a statement on Wednesday.

“Chairman Lim asked the concerned agencies to provide their broadcast/push messaging service for mobile device users as well as via emergency cell broadcast before the start of the actual drill,” said Salalima.

The drill is meant to test the response capabilities and preparedness of the government, private sector, non-government organizations, and other stakeholders in the event of a strong earthquake hitting Metro Manila.

Salalima said he is confident that many people would participate despite the drill taking place early morning.

“No one can predict when an earthquake would happen but the chances of survival are better when people are prepared and know what to do when a strong tremor happens,” said Salalima.
