ILOILO CITY - Iloilo province was placed under a state of calamity Wednesday due to a rise in the number of dengue cases.
The provincial board approved the declaration, following the endorsement of Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr.
The province has recorded 23 deaths out of 6,806 dengue cases from Jan. 1 to July 13, data from the Provincial Health Office showed.
The city on Monday declared a dengue outbreak after a 416.7 percent increase in dengue cases from the previous year.
Aside from Iloilo, Zamboanga Sibugay, South Cotabato, and Leyte have also been placed under the state of calamity due to dengue.
Last week, the Department of Health declared a national dengue alert which prompts public hospitals, health centers, and local government units to be prepared with medicine, equipment and personnel to respond to dengue cases.
