MANILA - The Department of Education (DepEd) on Wednesday lauded President Rodrigo Duterte's call for a salary increase for government workers, including public school teachers.
The passage of a new Salary Standardization Law (SSL) was among the legislative priorities Duterte mentioned during his 4th State of the Nation Address earlier this week.
The President's call "is consistent with [DepEd] Secretary Leonor Magtolis Briones' commitment to ensure an equitable and sustainable pay hike" for teachers, the Department said in a statement.
"Once approved, the new SSL will increase the compensation of government workers, including public school teachers whose work and toil shape the mind of the youth and build the foundation of a strong country," DepEd said.
"The Department hopes that this gain will help to further uplift the professional and personal condition of teachers as DepEd continues to work from enhancing access to improving the quality of basic education," it said.
As of June 2019, entry-level public-school teachers belong to Salary Grade 11 under Tranche 4 of the Salary Standardization Law. This means educators in public schools earn a monthly salary of P20,754.
