MANILA- In a rare public appearance, Senate President Aquilino Pimentel III’s partner graced the opening of the Senate session Monday morning, remaining low-key even as she piqued curiosity among those present at the event.
Dressed in a Mindanao-inspired Paul Cabral bolero over a plain green dress, businesswoman Kathryn Yu arrived with Pimentel at the Senate on Monday, her second time to attend such event.
Yu, whose mother was a classmate of Pimentel’s elder sister, Commission on Human Rights official Gwen Pimentel-Gana, now manages Pimentel’s law firm.
“He usually introduces me naman as… partner niya (his partner),” Yu said in a brief interview with reporters.
Asked about her chosen outfit, Yu said she wanted to wear something that evoked designs common in Marawi City, where a lingering conflict has resulted in a worsening humanitarian crisis.
“Sabi ko kasi gusto ko parang Marawi eh. But this one... dress, ordinary dress lang,” she said.
Yu said she preferred to stay on the sidelines of her beau’s public events, as she did when Pimentel cut the ribbon to open the Senate’s 2nd regular session Monday morning.
She was also present when Pimentel took the oath as Senate President at the opening of the 17th Congress last year, but her low-profile attendance remained under the media radar.
Pimentel had separated from his wife, Bb. Pilipinas-Universe 1998 Jewel May Lobaton, in May 2012. They were married for nearly 12 years and have two sons together. -- With reports from Sherrie Ann Torres, ABS-CBN News
