MANILA - The government is putting up media hubs in the Visayas and Mindanao to strengthen public broadcasting channel PTV before the Duterte administration ends, Communications Sec. Martin Andanar said Monday.
The state-run station needs to complete these "technical upgrades" before it can be at par with Britain's BBC, Andanar told ABS-CBN News.
The Communications chief earlier said he would restore the "glory days" of the "rundown" PTV station so that it can compete with other public broadcast networks.
"In terms of technical knowhow, PTV is getting there already," he said.
"We need to have relay stations across the country before we can even claim that we can start reshuffling or changing the programs," he said.
The Mindanao media hub is 90 percent complete, and would be finished this year, Andanar said.
"We want to finish the Mindanao media hub ngayong taong ito and then perhaps, in 2020 or 2021, we can already start the Visayas media hub," he said.
The regional hubs would boost PTV's presence in the regions where the state-run channel currently has "no presence," he said.
