MANILA - Sen. Risa Hontiveros on Wednesday poked fun at President Rodrigo Duterte's earlier advice that gasoline can be used to wash face masks, fact-checking the chief executive's claim that diesel can be used as a disinfectant.

The public should make sure that the health guidelines they follow during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) are "verified," Hontiveros said in a tweet.

"FACT CHECK: Ang gasolina at diesel ay HINDI DAPAT gamitin sa pagdi-disinfect. Puwede itong maging sanhi ng iba’t-ibang panganib," the opposition senator said.

"DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME," she said, ending her post with a smile emoji.

On Tuesday, Duterte said in a televised speech that face masks may be reused provided that they are cleaned with disinfectant sprays or gasoline.

"Maski gamitin mo siguro 'yan ng dalawang beses okay man, kung isprayhan mo ng alcohol pagtapos, 'wag 'yun inii-spray mo tapos suot agad," he said.

(Maybe even if you use it twice, it's fine. Just spray alcohol after but don't spray and then immediately wear it after.)

"Pagtapos ng araw, hang it somewhere. Isprayhan mo lang Lysol if you can afford it, 'yung wala, ibabad mo ng gasolina o diesel, p*t*ng*n*ng COVID 'yan, di uubra 'yan diyan," he added.

(At the end of the day, hang it somewhere. Spray it with Lysol if you can afford it. If not, dip it in gasoline or diesel. COVID-19 won't have a chance.)

The Department of Health earlier said that Duterte's advice may be another "joke" from the president.
