MANILA - Pampanga Rep. Mikey Arroyo on Monday said he sought former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s approval before backing the speakership bid of Taguig Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano, a critic of his mother’s presidency.

Rep. Arroyo was among the 266 House members who voted for President Rodrigo Duterte’s former runningmate hours before the chief executive delivered his 4th State of the Nation Address.

“She said of course,” Arroyo told ABS-CBN News.

“We follow anything the President says,” he said.

Duterte endorsed both Cayetano and PDP-Laban member Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Velasco as House speaker.

Under Duterte’s power-sharing agreement, Cayetano would serve for 15 months while Velasco would serve as the chamber’s leader in the remaining 21 months.

“In heeding the wisdom of the President, I voted for Cayetano,” he said when asked if he has moved on from the animosity between the Arroyo and the Cayetano dynasties.

In 2006, then First Gentleman Mike Arroyo - Mikey’s father - filed an ethics case and a separate libel case against Cayetano after the Taguig-Pateros lawmaker alleged that the president’s husband was maintaining secret bank accounts overseas.

Mikey and his late uncle Negros Occidental Rep. Iggy Arroyo were signatories to the ethics complaint.

Rep. Arroyo said this is all behind them now.

“We all have to play our role in nation building. He did his, I’m doing mine now,” he said, smiling.
