MANILA - Taguig-Pateros Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano will assume the House Speaker post when Congress opens on Monday, Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Velasco said Sunday.
Velasco, who will split the 3-year-term with Cayetano, said there are no reasons or threats that will prevent Cayetano from securing the post.
Under the term-sharing agreement, Cayetano will serve as House Speaker for the first 15 months, followed by Velasco who will lead for 21 months.
Velasco said he believes party leaders will support Cayetano in order to push for the administration's legislative agenda.
The Nationalist People's Coalition (NPC) and ruling PDP-Laban earlier pledged their support for Cayetano.
Velasco also dispelled any speculation regarding the breakfast meeting that Davao City Rep. Paolo Duterte will hold Monday.
He said Duterte called the meeting to get to know his colleagues better.
This after the President's eldest son earlier said there could be a "coup d'etat" for the House Speakership.
Velasco, meanwhile, said he will be attending both Duterte's and Cayetano's breakfast meetings. -- Report from Robert Maño, ABS-CBN News
