MANILA -- (UPDATE) The victory of Sen. Manny Pacquiao over Keith Thurman was a win for all Filipinos, Malacañang said Sunday as it thanked the boxing champ for bringing glory to the country and for uniting Filipinos.

"We thank Senator Manny for not only bringing honor and glory to our flag, but for once again uniting all Filipinos worldwide with his display of athleticism, power and Filipino pride," Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said in a statement.

The military applauded Pacquiao's dedication to his craft, hard work, and sacrifice.

"This latest win truly manifests his legacy and shows us Filipinos the value of enduring excellence," Armed Forces public affairs chief Col. Noel Detoyato said.

Colleagues of the boxer-turned-politician also congratulated Pacquiao, with Sen. Richard Gordon saying his victory "serves as an inspiration for great skill earned through constant hard work, great humility and magnanimity for all Filipinos."

"Indeed age does not matter and that if anything we aspire for is to be, it must be up to us. Congrats to the Greatness of the Filipino," he said.

Sen. Sonny Angara, meanwhile, said his colleague's win was "one giant celebration for his countrymen."

"By Monday, my friend and colleague will step again into the Senate ring to join the fight against our ancient enemies – hunger, joblessness, poverty," he said.

Sen. Miguel Zubiri lauded Pacquiao's "age-defying fighting spirit" as well as his legislative knowledge.

"Manny could fill boxing books with his distinct winning strategies and style. As his colleague in the Senate, I'm proud to say Senator Pacquiao also fills his legislative books well. Congratulations, Senator Pambansang Kamao Manny Pacquiao," he said.

Senators Lito Lapid and Joel Villanueva also commended their colleague.

"Hanga kami sa iyong determinasyon, dedikasyon at pagmamahal sa bayan Sen. Manny, at patuloy naming ipagdarangal ang tawagin kang People’s Champ!" Lapid said.

Villanueva added that Pacquiao was a "true inspiration to every Filipino."

"Tulad po ng ating mga kababayan na patuloy na lumalaban sa kabila ng hirap ng buhay, hindi po inurungan ng ating Pambansang Kamao ang bawat hamon sa loob at maging sa labas ng ring."

1-PACMAN party-list Rep. Mikee Romero, meanwhile, pushed for the passing of the Philippine Boxing Commission Act in light of Pacquiao's win.

"Long after the accolades and applause, this piece of legislation will honor what Manny represents: the indomitable spirit of the Filipino winning over adversities by sheer will and ability," he said.

PBA Party-list Rep. Jericho Nograles thanked Pacquiao for showing "the true face of a Filipino: Fierce and compassionate, spiritual and courageous, proud and dignified."

Samar Rep. Edgar Sarmiento lauded the senator's "hard work, dedication, discipline, experience, and faith" and said there's no doubt another Pacquiao fight will come.

"Despite his age, he outclassed Thurman through speed and solid combinations that were too much for a much youthful opponent," he said.
