MANILA - An anti-crime watchdog is renewing its call for the impeachment of Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales for her alleged "selective justice" and "bias" to former President Benigno Aquino III.
Atty. Ferdinand Topacio, counsel for the Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption (VACC), said the Ombudsman wanted to "get the best of both worlds" when she ordered Aquino charged with graft, usurpation of authority and graft over the botched Mamasapano raid.
"Siya ay naghain ng charges against former President Aquino para ipakita sa mundo na siya diumano ay hindi biased. But on the other hand, gusto rin niyang iligtas ang dating Pangulong Aquino sa pamamagitan ng paghahain ng mahihinang kaso," he told DZMM.
Topacio said the VACC believes Aquino, former national police chief, retired Director General Alan Purisima and the former chief of the police Special Action Force (SAF) retired Director Getulio Napeñas should be slapped with homicide charges.
"Buhay po kasi ang inutang. Buhay ang ninakaw. Dapat ang kaso homicide. 'Yun talaga ang krimen pag kayo ang nakakapatay," he said, adding that it should be 44 counts of homicide.
The VACC asked the Ombudsman on Wednesday to reconsider the filing of charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and usurpation of authority against Aquino.
If they will be turned down by the Ombudsman, the lawyer said, they will elevate their motion to the Supreme Court. Topacio said the families of the fallen 44 SAF troopers are very disappointed in the charges ordered filed by the Ombudsman.
"Kami ay nananawagan sa ating mga congressman na sana po with this recent event sana po ay mamulat na po sila. Kinakailangan po na ma-impeach na itong Ombudsman natin," he stressed.
