Interior and Local Government Secretary Eduardo Año said his department plans to meet with leaders of local government units (LGUs) to come up with a unified set of ordinances that will deal with those who violate COVID-19 protocols.

Año said he wanted a uniform set of penalties regarding the misuse of face masks and the non-observance of physical distancing.

The Philippines on Saturday recorded 2,357 new confirmed COVID-19 cases, marking its fourth highest single-day spike since the pandemic began.

The additional cases raised the nationwide total to 65,304, of which 41,464 are considered active. Some 90 percent of them are considered mild illness.

Año said one of the factors behind the spread of the virus is the improper use of face masks. This is why it should be included among the list of violations requiring a penalty.

Iyon talaga ang pinagmumulan ng transmission," he said.
