MANILA– President Rodrigo Duterte has signed an order raising funeral benefits for both public and private sector employees by P10,000.
Executive Order No. 33, signed by Duterte on July 17 hikes the funeral benefits for employees to P30,000, from the current P20,000.
In signing the order, Duterte said there was a need to “continually improve the benefits under the Employees’ Compensation Program to make them more responsive to the welfare and development needs of occupationally disabled workers.”
The President added that the current employees’ compensation funeral benefit “is no longer sufficient to cover ordinary funeral costs.”
The order also noted that the Employees’ Compensation Commission (ECC) has the mandate to upgrade the benefits for permanent disability or death, subject to the approval of the President, as long as the stability of the State Insurance Fund (SIF) will be guaranteed.
The government decided to hike the funeral benefits after results of actuarial studies of the Social Security System (SSS) and the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) concluded that the SIF would remain stable despite the increase.
“The ECC, SSS and GSIS are hereby directed to appropriate and release the amounts necessary to cover the increase in benefits,” the order reads.
