MANILA - Immigration authorities arrested a Chinese fugitive wanted by the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) for large-scale smuggling outside the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Tuesday afternoon.
Airport police intelligence unit head Noel Abadilla identified the fugitive as Wang Xiaobao.
Wang has been on the run since 2009 when a warrant was issued against him.
Abadilla, in his report to airport general manager Ed Monreal, said Chinese authorities tipped the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) regarding the arrival of Wang's family to the Philippines.
Wang picked up his family at the parking area of NAIA Terminal 1.
When he was about to be arrested, he attempted to escape by getting off the vehicle. He ran to the street under the heavy rain, but was still intercepted.
Wang will be turned over to the Bureau of Immigration (BI) pending the process of his deportation back to China. - report from Raoul Esperas, ABS-CBN News
