MANILA - Lack of ventilation may have caused the fire in SM North EDSA on Sunday night, according to the Bureau of Fire Protection.
"Pag ang warehouse walang pumapasok na hangin at puro init, puwedeng mag-cause ng apoy yan," said Insp. Rodelio Bernabe.
Initial probe showed the fire hit the 4th floor of the mall, which serves as a warehouse for toys.
The blaze began around 8:30 p.m. and was raised to 3rd alarm before it was declared out by past 10:00 p.m.
BFP said firemen had a hard time putting out the fire due to the thick smoke. Some firemen were also rushed to the hospital after suffering from suffocation.
Sprinklers in the mall, said Insp. Bernabe, did not work because they were too high from the ground.
"Gumana kaya lang matagal. Kasi masyadong mataas ang ceiling nila. Bago pumutok ang sprinkler, temperature 'yun e," he said.
Authorities are still trying to determine the blaze's damage.
In SM North's official statement, it said their emergency team responded to the incident quickly and that no one was hurt in the incident.
