MANILA - The Makabayan bloc has asked the House of Representatives to look into the closure of 55 Lumad schools in southern Mindanao.
Bayan Muna Rep. Eufemia Cullamat condemned the action of Education Secretary Leonor Briones and Davao City Department of Education (DepEd) officer-in-charge Evelyn Fetalvero for suspending schools operated and owned by the Salugpungan Ta’ Tanu Igkanogon Community Learning Centers in Davao region.
“Ang Salugpungan ay nagtuturo ng tunay na kultura at pagpapahalaga sa kanilang lupang ninuno para protektahan ang kalikasan," she said.
(The Salugpungan teaches true culture and giving importance to lands of our ancestors to protect nature.)
"Sa halip na gipitin at ipagkait ng DepEd ang edukasyon ng mga Lumad ay dapat pa nga nilang kilalanin at tulungan ang pagpupursigi ng mga katutubo."
(Instead of denying education to the Lumad, the DepEd should recognize the perseverance of the indigenous and help them.)
Education Secretary Leonor Briones had asserted that the suspended schools were not able to comply with regulations.
ACT Teachers Representative France Castro urged DepEd to revoke the order.
"We challenge Secretary Briones and the regional officer-in-charge to integrate with the Lumad and see the situation that they have to face everyday, instead of basing an order on false reports by the military," she said.
