MANILA - An alleged bomb expert of the Islamic State-inspired Maute group was killed in a firefight with police and military forces in General Santos City on Monday, authorities said.
Najib Calimba Pundug, alias Najib Hussein, allegedly fired at authorities who tried to serve him an arrest warrant at his hideout in Barangay Fatima at around 2:15 a.m., police said.
A pistol, a hand grenade and an Islamic State flag were seized from the suspect. A policeman, identified only as PO3 Jerry Feo, was wounded in the encounter.
Pundug escaped from Marawi City when terrorist leader Omar Maute was killed by state troops, police said. His warrant of arrest was issued by Judicial Branch 11 in Malabang, Lanao del Sur.
He was included in Arrest Order no. 1 issued by Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana after martial law was declared in Mindanao. The suspect was wanted for kidnapping and serious illegal detention.
Meanwhile, five of Pundug's relatives were also arrested for obstruction of justice by coddling of a fugitive.
Police also nabbed in Nafisa Pundug, the alleged wife of wanted Maute leader Abu Dar in a separate operation.--report from Jay Dayupay, ABS-CBN News
