MANILA - Former Senator Helena Benitez passed away in her sleep on Thursday. She was 102 years old.
Her remains lie at Heritage Park in Taguig.
There is a memorial Mass at 1:00 pm today and her remains will be cremated after the Mass. She will then be brought to Philippine Women's University, founded by the Benitez family, at 5:00 pm today.
On Tuesday, she will be brought to the Senate for necrological service followed by inurnment at Mira Nila.
Benitez was born in Manila on June 27, 1914.
She held several university degrees including Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science in Education, Magna Cum Laude, Philippine Women's University; and Master of Arts, George Washington University, USA (1939); Post Graduate Studies, University of Chicago and Iowa State College, USA.
She was elected senator from 1968-1973. As senator, she authored and co-authored laws on education, manpower and youth development, family, housing and environment.
She also received numerous citations and awards from many government and non-government entities for her contribution in education, women, environment and habitat, civic and church work and international affairs.
