Town mayor, cops survive ambush in Maguindanao

MAGUINDANAO - The mayor of South Upi town in Maguindanao was ambushed in Barangay Kibucay in Upi town, Maguindanao on Thursday afternoon.

Mayor Obit Insular was on board his vehicle on his way back to South Upi when he and his police escorts headed by police Senior Inspector Roel Villarin were attacked by unidentified armed men using a rocket propelled grenade (RPG) launcher, as confirmed by shrapnel recovered at the crime scene.

The police escorts fired back at the assailants, causing the suspects to immediately withdraw from the area.

There were no reported casualties in the failed ambush.

Authorities are investigating the incident.

Insular is a former barangay chairman in South Upi. He won in the recent elections, beating veteran politicians.
