MANILA (2nd UPDATE)—A 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck the coast of Surigao del Sur early Saturday, Phivolcs said.
The tectonic tremor occurred at 4:42 a.m. at a depth of 5 kilometers southeast of Carrascal town. Phivolcs initially reported that the quake's epicenter was northwest of Cortes town.
Intensity 5, which could produce strong shaking in buildings and could cause hanging objects to swing violently, was recorded in Carrascal, Surigao del Sur and Butuan City, Agusan del Norte.
Intensity 4, which could cause moderately strong shaking, was felt in Surigao City in Surigao del Norte, Tandag City in Surigao del Sur, Gingoog City and Magsaysay in Misamis Oriental and Talacogon, Agusan del Sur.
Cagwait in Surigao del Sur, Balingoan, Salay, Balingasag, Jasaan and Villanueva in Misamis Oriental and Cagayan de Oro City experienced intensity 3.
Intensity 2, which could cause hanging objects to swing lightly, was reported in Mambajao, Camiguin.
Meanwhile, instrumental intensity 3 was recorded in Gingoog City, Misamis Oriental; instrumental intensity 2 in Cebu City and Borongan City, Eastern Samar; and instrumental intensity 1 in Bislig City, Surigao del Sur and Cagayan de Oro City.
In Carmen, Surigao del Sur, the quake caused part of the ceiling of the public market and Catholic church to collapse.
Phivolcs said the moderately strong tremor is expected to cause damage and trigger aftershocks.
