MANILA - A Filipino priest on Saturday was elected Master or head of the Dominican Order of Preachers worldwide during the order's annual General Chapter in Vietnam.
Fr. Gerard Francisco Timoner III O.P. will lead the religious order worldwide, succeeding French national Fr. Bruno Cadore O.P., becoming the first Asian to take the post.
Cadore held the top post for nine years from 2010.
Timoner had served as the provincial head of the Dominican Order in the Philippines from 2012 to 2016, according to its official website.
Born in Daet, Camarines Norte, Timoner obtained his Philosophy degree at the Philippine Dominican Center of Institutional Studies in 1991. He finished Theology at the University of Santo Tomas and was ordained as priest in 1995.
Timoner also served as UST chancellor.
Pope Francis had also appointed Timoner as a member of the International Theological Commission of the Vatican in 2014.
