ZAMBOANGA CITY – Authorities confiscated 1,805 reams of smuggled cigarettes worth a million pesos from a passenger cargo vessel at the local port Friday morning.

Task Force Aduana headed by the Philippine Coast Guard together with other law enforcement units seized the cigarettes aboard MV Lady Mary Joy 1 that came from Jolo, Sulu.

PCG-Zamboanga said the cigarettes were seized at the cargo deck of the ship, stored inside three large boxes, which according to the checker, was declared as assorted species of marine products.

Authorities said the smuggled cigarettes could have originated from Malaysia and Indonesia.

The smuggled cigarettes have been turned over to the Bureau Of Customs for safekeeping. The agency is investigating who owns the smuggled items.

This is the second operation against smuggled cigarettes within the week. Last Wednesday, more than 2,000 reams of smuggled cigarettes worth P1.2-million were confiscated from 3 vessels.
