MANILA—Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III apparently has eyes on a Senate seat, President Rodrigo Duterte said Friday.
Duterte made the remark as he commended Bello’s performance as labor chief.
“And I would like to commend Bello. Pero ang totoo talaga nito, matiyaga lang — tamad man 'to, estudyante pa kami. Pero medyo matiyaga ngayon kasi gustong mag-senador. Pagbigyan na lang ninyo,” he said in a speech at the Araw ng Pasasalamat for OFWs at Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City.
(He is persevering. He was lazy when we were students, but he perseveres now because he wants to be a senator. Give him a chance.)
Last year, Bello applied for the Ombudsman, but his bid was marred by pending cases.
He served as justice secretary and solicitor general during the term of former President Fidel Ramos.
