MANILA - Albay Rep. Edcel Lagman, one of the petitioners against martial law in Mindanao, said he and other opposition lawmakers will oppose any extension of the declaration.
In an interview, Lagman said the declaration of martial law in Mindanao led to the devastation of Marawi City.
"That declaration devastated Marawi City. The President is pursuing a policy of destroy and rehabilitate which could have been avoided if martial law was not declared," he told ANC on Wednesday.
Lagman fears the decision of the Supreme Court upholding the declaration of martial law in Mindanao has made it easier for any sitting Philippine president to declare martial law and suspend the writ of the privilege of habeas corpus.
"That decision would give the go signal to the president because it gives the president excessive leeway or flexibility in declaring martial law that goes against the constitutional directive," he said.
The lawmaker admits chances that the 11 justices who voted in favor of martial law would reverse their decision are far-fetched, but they will still file a motion for reconsideration.
"It is for the purpose of telling the public about the specific parameters of the President's declaration of martial law in the light of the numerous safeguards in the Constitution," he said.
