MANILA - Vice President Leni Robredo on Wednesday broke her silence after President Rodrigo Duterte called her "incompetent."
Robredo, a lawyer and a former lawmaker, said Duterte should instead focus on economic issues rather than insult her or God.
"Ayoko na sana i-dignify pero siguro sabihin ko na lang na imbes na insultuhin ako o ang Diyos, asikasuhin na lang muna ang mga problema ng ating ekonomiya," she said.
(I don't want to dignify his statement, but I would just say that instead of him insulting me or God, he should just focus on our economy's problems.)
Duterte has drawn criticism from the Catholic Church and other religious groups after he called God “stupid” and raised questions about certain Church doctrines and beliefs, such as the story of creation, the concept of heaven and hell, and the Last Supper.
The President on Tuesday called Robredo "incompetent" and said he would not step down if she would assume his post.
"Kung siya mag-presidente? (If she will become president?) Look, I will not resign because it will make her president. My resignation is addressed to the people para makapili sila ng gusto nila," Duterte told reporters in Clark, Pampanga.
"Siya (she), I don’t think she can ever be ready to govern a country. Reason? Incompetence. She’s not capable of running a country like this, Philippines."
Atty. Barry Gutierrez, legal adviser of the Office of the Vice President, in response, enumerated issues hounding the Duterte administration.
"Inflation: 5.2%. Bigas: ₱42/kilo. $1 = ₱53.51. Dagdag sa pambansang utang: ₱1.19 trillion. Sariling karagatan: bawal sa Pinoy. Trapik: palala pa. Patayan, tila araw araw na lang. Incompetent? Nagsalita ang magaling," Gutierrez said in a statement.
