MANILA - A magnitude 5 earthquake struck Surigao del Norte province shortly after Wednesday midnight, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.
The tremor hit at 12:24 a.m., some five kilometers southwest of San Francisco town.
It was tectonic in origin and had a depth of eight kilometers.
Intensity 5 was felt in Surigao City.
The tremor is forecast to trigger aftershocks but is not expected to cause any damage.
