MANILA - President Rodrigo Duterte has declared the second week of July of every year as "National Infection Prevention and Control Week" in a bid to promote health consciousness while the world battled the coronavirus pandemic.

Duterte, under Proclamation No. 971, also declared the second Saturday of July of every year as “Surgical Infection Prevention Awareness Day.”

"There is a need to emphasize prevention and health promotion as tools to address the threats posed by infection, and attain a safer, more effective and higher quality of health service delivery," Duterte said in his proclamation.

The President also asked all hospitals and health facilities to participate and help in the conduct of programs and activities to promote health information on infections.

The proclamation was signed on June 23 but made public only by Malacañang on Friday.

It was issued while the Philippines continues to battle the COVID-19 pandemic, which has claimed over 1,000 lives in the country.

The Philippines as of July 9 has 51,754 confirmed COVID-19 cases. This includes 1,314 deaths and 12,813 recoveries.
